Artists in Rise
AIR NETWORK JUNE 2022

ONLINE EVENTS:
18TH STREET: The Influencers and The Gatekeepers: Video Premiere and Q&A with n00n and Marcus Civin.
n00n and Marcus Civin will present two short animated videos—The Influencers, created in January 2022, and its sequel, The Gatekeepers, a premiere crowdsourced from 18th Street Arts Center’s local and global community. Stick around after the screening for an online conversation with the artists.
The Influencers is a fictional biographical sketch of two obsessive, stylish fixtures in the art world, Margaretha and Wald, who live a sometimes quotidian and sometimes whimsical baroque lifestyle. Margaretha and Wald stress about various and impending catastrophes that combine and manifest as delusions. They associate and dissociate with their bodies, the environment, the pandemic, and each other.
In The Gatekeepers, as the pandemic rages, a manipulative self-conscious powerbroker named Sydonia hosts an exclusive party on her gothic pearl farm behind high walls and iron gates. Only, before the party ends, one of her guests lavishly betrays her. Her attempts to remain on top turn her upside down. The Gatekeepers references class, high society, architecture, and gates in New York, Los Angeles, and other cities.

STUDIO MUSEUM IN HARLEM: Museums as Systems | Day One
In its inaugural iteration, Museums as Systems asks: How are museums systems of artistry, archives, education, labor, care, communication, and communities? By assembling curators, writers, educators, critics, creatives, and administrators in the arts, this convening seeks to spark connection, inspire collective action, and create an avenue for participants to engage with and be motivated by The Studio Museum in Harlem’s mission.
Session 1: Archives & Permanent Collections– Safeguarding Our History
What is our responsibility to the archive, or by extension, our responsibility to history? This session will look at the importance of safeguarding histories, and use the archive as a roadmap to the future. This session will bring a look at curatorial and archival work, shedding light on specific examples where artists and communities have created art that sits outside of established systems (of institutions, figuration, political vs apolitical, the singular artists ego).
Session 2: Media & Communications – How Museums Speak to People
How do Museums speak to people? Design, media, and communication systems act as translators of institutional values, vision, and mission as well as mechanisms for problem solving, accessibility, and world building. From traditional print marketing to online exhibitions, institutional communication and design have never been more multifaceted, expansive, radical, and ripe for disruption in 2022. In an ever-expanding digital landscape, how can and do we stay connected to meaningfully engage audiences interested in art & culture?

Session 3: Education & Public Programs – The Role of Care & Wellness Within Institutions
‘How can you care for others when you’re not cared for?’ Who is doing care work in museums? This session explores the relationship between care & wellness and education: what it looks like, why it is essential, and how to create these spaces within institutions for staff (internal) and publics (external).
Session 4: Education & Curatorial – Intersections of Practices
Who are curators and educators in service to and in support of? Where do their values, intentions and processes converge? What is the role of an exhibition as a learning space? How can a classroom be an exhibition space? This session explores the legacy and precedents of these intersecting models, imagining what more is possible when education and curatorial build and engage together.
